The overall experience is a beautiful and artistic surprise that’s quite unexpected within an ordinary neighborhood. As you climb all 163 steps, stop to see the amazing views of the Sunset Distract. Not only is it an amazing sight, but it’s also a good way to get a work out.
Moraga Steps also just so happen to be conveniently located just 3 blocks away from 19th Ave. The steps are very easy to locate and are well maintained. It is worth the visit, a must see work of art. If you succeed in making it up all the steps, you will be rewarded with the sweeping views of San Francisco.
Inspired by the famous steps in Rio de Janeiro, Irish ceramicist Aileen Barr and mosaic artist Colette Crutcher joined forces alongside over 300 volunteers for over a two and a half year period until they unveiled this project.
There are over 2,000 hand-made tiles and 75,000 fragments of tile, mirror and stained glass in the finished piece. The names of over 220 sponsors were actually woven into the sweeping sea-to-sky design.
