Like many great neighborhoods Nob hill has a rich history built beneath
it. With its geography and business available during its beginnings,
Nob hill was shaped into the neighborhood it is today. Nob Hill began
around the 19th century and with its great views and friendly atmosphere
it quickly
became an area for high end business and rich families. Because of
the rich families living in Nob Hill during the 19th centaury, it
was sometimes
referred to as snob hill. In fact the word Nob was a slang term synonymous
with the word Snob during that era.
There
were a quite a few families that had built large mansions during
that time, along with the thriving
high
end hotels and business. So when the 1906 earthquake hit San Francisco,
the mansions and business went down along with it. One of the landmarks
that arose from the 1906 earthquake was the Huntington mansion. But
even so it became demolished in the 1960’s. However the part of the
mansion did stay with San Francisco and is Huntington Park. Most
of the people
who had their mansions demolished by the earthquake rebuilt their
mansions in Pacific Heights and Cow Hollow. The hotels that exist
today have been
built above the areas of the old mansions.
History of Nob Hill
Currently Nob Hill is not an area only
for the rich but for people of other classes too. And because of
the tourist attractions,
the neighborhood’s
economy is not doing bad either. The geography of the neighborhood
is still benefiting it. In fact, many movies and a TV show have
been filmed in Nob
Hill just because of the city ’s
views you get from there.
